A Saint-Émilion Grand Cru combining power and aromatic richness
Sensory features:Soft herbal and menthol accents on the nose join ripe bramble berries and touches of cedar spice. Juicy and fleshy, this has a nice overall expression combining strength and heft with focus and push. Lovely bitter orange, cocoa and coffee touches join the fruit with fine tannins giving a touch of bite to the palate. Feels finessed and well worked.
Grape varieties: 71% Merlot & 29% Cabernet Franc
Estate: With origins dating back to the 16th century and the first harvest in 1599, Château Fombrauge is one of the oldest crus in Saint-Émilion. The magnificent property has a chartreuse dating from the 17th century. Under the direction of the Dumas de Fombrauge family, Château Fombrauge became a true model for Bordeaux viticulture. Today, this Bernard Magrez property is one of the finest crus in Saint- Émilion.
Vineyard: Château Fombrauge 2022 is a Saint-Émilion wine from a vineyard located around Saint-Christophe des Bardes. The vines are 30 years old on average and are planted on clay-limestone soils with Fronsadais molasse. The vineyard, which has been awarded the High Environmental Value Level 3 label, is maintained on a plot-by-plot basis with grassing of the vine rows and ploughing.
Vintage: A warm, wet winter preceded a warm, dry spring. The summer was marked by scorching conditions and very little rainfall.
Winemaking & ageing: Intra-plot selection. The grapes were harvested by hand in crates and sorted manually and optically. Extraction adapted to each vat. Long vatting periods (30 to 35 days).
