The character and elegance of a Margaux red wine
Sensory Features: The 2022 Ferrière offers up aromas of dark berries, plums and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate that's suave, elegantly muscular and lively. From biodynamically farmed clay-rich gravels, this 18-hectare estate (formerly leased to Château Lascombes) possesses an unusually high proportion of old vines, with fully one-third of their vineyards over 70 years of age.
Grape Varieties: 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot & 1% Cabernet Franc.
Estate: Located in the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Ferrière traces its origins back to the 18th century. The acquisition in 1988 of this 3rd Grand Cru Classé by the Villars family marked the beginning of its renaissance. Under the leadership of Bernadette and then her daughter Claire, two generations of women are shaping this property on Bordeaux’s Left Bank.
Vineyard: Château Ferrière 2022 is a Margaux wine made from a 24-hectare vineyard. 95% of the vines are located on the Margaux plateau, in the heart of the appellation, composed of deep gravel on limestone marl. A meticulous massal selection is carried out from a third of the vineyard dating from the 1950s in order to preserve the biodiversity of the old grape varieties (Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc). Château Ferrière is the only Grand Cru Classé certified in Organic Agriculture (AB) in 2015 and in Biodynamics in 2018 (Demeter and Biodyvin).
Winemaking & Ageing: Vinification by plot. Alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts from the vineyard. Gentle extraction, at a temperature maintained at under 25°C. Maceration for 3 weeks in vats. Aged for 18 months in barrels (35% new, 35% one wine), ovoid vats (20%) and amphorae (10%).
