Comando G

Country: Méntrida - Spain

Region: Méntrida

Comando G founders Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia met studying oenology in Madrid. Bonding over their mutual love of wine, the two found themselves working in similar areas of Spain’s Sierra De Gredos mountain range; Danny at his family vineyard, Bodegas Jimenez-Landi and Fernando at Bodega Marañones.

They were drawn to the windswept and almost abandoned Sierra de Gredos terroir – high altitudes, freely draining soils, as well as a mild and relatively humid climate. Though not an easy terroir for winemaking, Daniel and Fernando wanted to explore to the mountainous terrain, determined to refine the area’s traditionally “workhorse” Garnacha grape into their own unique product.

They gained access to Gredos’ older vineyards by spending time consulting with and gaining the trust of older winemakers in the area, usually by drinking beer with them in local bars. Some of these winemakers were in their 80’s or 90’s, hoping to continue their legacy but without anyone to pass their vines on to.

Dani and Fernando love Toronto. During one fateful visit, they enjoyed beers at Burdock Brewery, wine at Pearl Morissette and belted out Karaoke at the Gladstone Hotel. Dani is an avid rock and roller, with fans including wine critics Luis Gutiérrez of Robert Parker.

Rozas 1er Cru - € 37.60

ComandoG RozasPremier PrimerCru SierradeGredos CastillayLeon2018 2048x

Rozas 1er Cru comes from several plots, totaling 5 ha, of Garnacha located near the town of Rozas de Puerto Real. Similar to its “little” sibling, La Bruja, Rozas 1er Cru is lithe and winsome example of mountain Garnacha but with a deeper minerality and slightly firmer tannin, hence the Burgundian inspired name.

Commandos like to be inspired by Burgundy. This wine is also a good example of this. In addition to their parcel vineyards that they catalog as Grand Crus, we have a 1er Cru from Rozas de Puerta Real here at an altitude of 900 meters. Again a very nice Garnacha !.

Sensory features: The Comando G Rozas 1er Cru has a bright red colour, sparkling with pink highlights. On the nose a fruit basket full of red fruit, berries, cherries and spiciness. Rather light attack but very complex with an impressive finish. Here is a Garnacha of Anthology!

La Bruja de Rozas - €20.00

Comado G Bruja NV

La Bruja de Rozas is a red wine made in Madrid by Comando G. Comando G. is a young winery with the idea of producing wines from old Grenache. Hence the name G. G for Grenache.

Three young but very famous winemakers - Fernando Garcia ( Bodegas Marañones ), Daniel Gómez Jimenez Landi ( Bodegas Jimenez Landi ) and Marc Isart ( Bodegas Bernaveleva ) - are responsible for the Command G. with the intention to further the Madrid Region de Grenache grape to develop. All three winemakers produce Top grenaches under their individual label that can compete with the famous Chateaneuf wines, especially if you consider the price. The area is ideal for the Grenache (high, warm during the day with considerable cooling, considerable lime soil). This Averia costs a fraction of a 'Chateauneuf entry' but is guaranteed to be better. An excellent and more affordable alternative for lovers of southern rhône wines. Full, not too tannic, smooth and deliciously spicy. A wine with charm.

Sensory featuresThe Bruja de Rozas sources grapes from several vineyards in the vicinity of Las Rozas de Puerto Real. All hand harvested, naturally fermented with open top fermentation in French oak vats for nine months, strawberries, sun dried leather, blood orange, red currant and hibiscus all fuse together with plush tannins and fine acidity that finishes with clay pots and baking spice on the backend.
